A TALE OF TWO CITIES

PIONEER THEATRE COMPANY
October–November 1994

Electrifying... mesmerizing.... You will be struck to the core.
Don Shaeffer
KSL RADIO

PTC's "Tale" is a formidable evening of theatre, stunning for its majestic visual scale and absorbing in the delivery of a story about sin and sacrifice... Morey's thoughtful rendering inspires interesting questions.... (about) sacrifice... revenge.... spirituality....  powerful and eloquent.

SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

While Charles Dickens' epic A TALE OF TWO CITIES chronicles "the best of times and the worst of times"... Pioneer Theatre Company's spectacular staging of Dicken's tale of romance, revenge, and revolution has an abundance of "bests".... The very concept of compacting nearly 19 years of turbulent French and British history into one reasonably long evening (or afternoon) of theatre must have been intimidating, but Morey - as evidenced in his previous adaptations of "The Three Musketeers", "Dracula", and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" - is a literary craftsman of the first order.

THE DESERET NEWS

...Fashioned by the hand of a consummate stylist with a flair for the literary... A TALE OF TWO CITIES ultimately finds its place in Pioneer Theatre Company's rich tradition of fall adaptations by melding the epic and the personal in a stunningly designed and directed piece of theatre.

THE EVENT

...Morey's adaptation does remarkably well by the book... strikes a nice balance: it recreates the book's richness without losing itself in detail and keeps the storyline clear without oversimplifying... Act II builds beautifully and relentlessly, and the final scene couldn't be staged more powerfully or triumphantly.
Barbara Bannon
